The United States on Monday condemned the government of Venezuela’s dictator Nicolas Maduro for failing to regain “fair and free” electoral practice.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blingen said in a statement on Sunday that the regime had “changed the process of deciding the outcome of these elections long before the ballots are cast” in the regions (21).

In this regard, the head of US diplomacy cited arbitrary arrests and harassment of political actors and civil society, criminalizing the activities of the opposition, manipulating the videotapes of candidates and voter registration across the political spectrum.

Blingen noted that more than 250 people have been detained for political reasons. “The Venezuelan people have been denied their right to express their views freely and to choose their own leaders,” he said.

In the Secretary of State’s view, these procedures were carried out to end political pluralism and to “ensure that elections do not reflect the will of the Venezuelan people.” He reiterated the US call for the “Maduro regime” to end its repression and allow the Venezuelan people to live in a “peaceful, stable and democratic country.”

“The United States supports the people of Venezuela in their desire to restore democracy peacefully through free and fair elections, and gives full respect to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” he said.

Finally, Blinken recalled that the US government supported domestic talks in Venezuela and the efforts of opposition leader Juan Quito, whom the US calls the “interim president” of South America.

“We will continue to work with Venezuela and our international partners to use all diplomatic and economic tools to press for the release of all those unjustly detained for political reasons,” he said.

To rebuild “true unity”

Juan Guido said on Monday that there was an urgent need to “rebuild a sincere unity that would legitimize leadership in Venezuela” after elections in the country where 20 of the 23 governors were elected by Chavismo.

“Of course, this is a moment that will lead us to greater unity, to reorganize the leadership in Venezuela, to rebuild a united front, and to a united front that responds to the interests of the Venezuelan people,” Guaidó told a news conference in Caracas.

“Looking at the election results, it’s not the time to blame, it is not the time to show” respect for the citizens “and it is not the time to think about” what happened yesterday cannot be called a free and fair election, “he said.

“Today is a day of respect for citizens, a focus on the Venezuelan people and leaders, a day to reflect on behalf of those who call themselves leaders in Venezuela today. Because it is clear that all the factors that confront the regime need to be re-integrated, ”he added.

Guaidó reiterated that Sunday’s elections were held “without preconditions” and that the opposition’s abbreviations were being “hijacked” and that they were organized by the electoral authority “under the protection” of the Nicolas Maduro regime.

“When we want to choose Venezuela’s future, they want to trap us in the false dilemma of whether to vote or not. , “He said.

The former parliamentarian insisted that the elections would be a solution to the political conflict only if the conditions were guaranteed and the election controversy focused on “the power seized by Nicolas Maduro”.
