meteor shower

One of the most anticipated celestial events of the year is scheduled to take place on August 12-13. That’s when the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak. These are the debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862.

Due to the location of these materials, the meteor shower will be easy to see in the countries of the Northern Hemisphere. In Brazil, residents of the northern and northeastern regions will have the best chances to see the show.

Super Moon

Soon after, there is a great expectation for the first “supermoon” of 2024, on August 19, when it will be closest to Earth. This means that the natural moon will appear larger than we are used to. The sight is called a “super blue moon,” not because of the color, but because of the increased brightness of this star.

Planetary Conjunctions

At least five planetary conjunctions are expected in August alone. Basically, this phenomenon occurs when two or more planets, moons, or asteroids appear to be closer together. However, this is just an optical illusion. See dates:

  • 08/07: Venus-Mercury Conjunction
  • 14/08: Conjunction between Jupiter and Mars
  • 21/08: Moon and Saturn conjunction with Saturn occulting the Moon
  • 08/27: Moon Conjunction with Jupiter
  • 28/08: Moon Conjunction with Mars

How to follow astronomical events

To see these scenes, you need to be a little lucky and have a clear day. If so, find a dark place without bright lights. No special equipment is needed, just patience. Skywatching apps can help with this task. Some of them, such as Celeste Chart, Sky Map, and Stellarium, are used to find objects and reference points in the sky.
