Sphere, a giant ball that promises to change the world of entertainment, opened over the weekend in Las Vegas in the United States.
Located next to the famous Strip in Nevada City, it is the largest spherical structure in the world. It is 112 meters high, more than the Statue of Liberty or Big Ben, and 157 meters wide.
After construction was halted for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ball opened its doors on September 26 with a U2 concert.
Irish rock band performs the show U2: UV Achtung Baby lives in the field – in honor of their 1991 album – for 25 days until mid-December.
The Sphere will also host the premiere, on October 6, of a film by acclaimed New York director Darren Aronofsky (best known for his films). black Swan that it Whaleamong others) were specially designed for this hall, integrating technologies to create an immersive experience.

BBC Mundo, the BBC's Spanish-language service, has collected 4 data on the size of this new entertainment space.
1. LED screen with an area of 54,000 square meters, which is the largest in the world
The outside of the ball is completely covered with an LED screen with an area of 54,000 square metres, the equivalent of about 8 football fields.
The huge screen contains 50 million LED lights, which will be illuminated day and night. It was lit for the first time to celebrate the Fourth of July this year, which is the Independence Day of the United States.
The indoor screen area, which viewers watch inside the ball, is 15,000 square metres.
With 173 million pixels, it is the highest resolution display in the world. It extends from the ground to a height of 76 metres.
An office in Zaragoza, Spain, led by architect Miguel Montgeville, is responsible for the design and engineering of the two displays.
2. It can accommodate 17.5 thousand spectators
This is the seating capacity of the hall, although it can accommodate up to 20,000 people if hall fans are included.
A total of 10,000 seats are equipped with haptic technology, meaning they can vibrate to make the viewer tactilely feel what is happening on the screen. They can also create wind, temperature and odor effects.
3. About 167 thousand speakers
Sphere sound is designed using a technology known as Wave Field Synthesis, which uses a large number of electronically controlled speakers so that the interference of waves produces a very similar audio experience anywhere in the room.
Some participants in the inauguration also reported that the sound insulation was surprising. In other words, outside the room, little or nothing can be heard about what is happening inside.
4. At a cost of 2.3 billion US dollars
In 2019, the total cost of the project was estimated at US$1.2 billion (R$6 billion).
However, some design changes, the crisis in the supply chain that occurred as a result of the pandemic and increased inflation in the last phase of construction, led to the investment in Sphere almost doubling, to US$2.3 billion (R$11.6 billion). ).
It is the most expensive arena in Las Vegas, even higher than Allegiant Stadium, which has four times the capacity of the Sapphire.
