(Reuters) – The first film starring Johnny Depp since the defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard is set to open the Cannes Film Festival in France next month, fans said.

The French-language film “Jeanne du Barry” stars director Maïwenn Le Besco, better known as Maiwenn, as Jeanne Becu, a woman who rises from poverty to the circles of King Louis XV. Deep plays the King. The film will have its world premiere in Cannes on May 16th.

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor has appeared in a handful of film and television appearances since the trial ended in June 2022. He has made guest appearances at the MTV Video Music Awards and Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty.

Depp also voiced an animated cartoon in the movie “Johnny Puff: Secret Mission,” which was released last month.

The actor is trying to rebuild his career after almost winning a legal dispute in the United States against Heard, the actress and former partner who accused him of abuse. Depp denied hitting her or any other woman.

Two years earlier, Depp lost a British libel suit against the Sun newspaper, which called him a “woman beater”. A London High Court judge ruled that Depp had repeatedly assaulted Heard. The actor was quickly dropped from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, the “Harry Potter” spin-off, and was largely shunned in Hollywood.
