Iranian police arrested seven people linked to the UK after the protests

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards arrested seven people on Sunday, including dual nationals linked to Britain, amid anti-government protests that have rocked the country, state media reported.

“Seven key leaders of recent UK-related protests have been detained by IRGC (Revolutionary Guards) intelligence, including dual citizens attempting to flee the country,” the statement said.

The unrest began on September 16 when 22-year-old Iranian Kurddin Mahza Amini died in detention for wearing “inappropriate clothing” under Iran’s strict Islamic dress code for women.

The protests, in which demonstrators called for the overthrow of Iran’s ruling theocracy, were the biggest challenge to the Shiite Muslim-ruled country since the 1979 revolution.

The government blamed the protesters for the destruction of public property and said they were trained and armed by enemies including the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
