The effects and use of artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly becoming a reality in people’s daily lives. An example of this is the photos circulating on social networks last week that showed Pope Francis in a very unusual outfit – which, in fact, turned out to be fake.
But the question remains: How do you know if an image is really the result of a moment you experienced in reality, or if it is an AI-generated state?
According to experts in AI and deepfake, an artificial intelligence formula that generates content from the intersection of data, it is important to pay attention to details and analyze images. This check, which aims to ensure that information is correct, prevents fake news and misinformation from spreading, especially through social networks.
Since we are talking about artificial intelligence, at least for now, it can be said that machines have flaws, that is, the content produced is not perfect. Thus, to find out if the image was generated by artificial intelligence, pay attention to the symmetry of faces and objects, possible smudges, blurring and unusual details present in the image. Details in the eyes, ears, and teeth, from posture to individual lighting, can indicate whether an image is composed.
If the image includes people, the size and texture of the hair can also indicate whether or not AI is used. There are cases when the hair depicted is so soft that it looks like a painting.
If you spot unreadable characters, especially in the background of an image, it is also possible that it is a fake image. The same thing happens when the background is so blurry, it even blurs the image.
Another element to note is the contours of the image and the continuity of the lines. For example, some parts of the body that have square cuts on their surface are most likely an artifact. Objects that blend into the skin are also a good example of how AI creation can be discovered.
But it is worth noting that even if the image is very convincing, it is important to look for other information that confirms the authenticity of the content conveyed by the image or not. For this, you can “google” and search for everything from relevant images to reliable information about the truth on official websites, for example.
There are also systems that help detect AI-generated images. One of them is the Fotoforensics website. When you upload an image or add the link where it is located, the system presents a series of information about the image.
