Aston Martin experienced a rollercoaster of emotions at the F1 United States GP on Sunday (22). After starting both cars from the pitlane, he managed to save good points with Lance Stroll – Fernando Alonso retired with car problems.
The North American weekend got off to a rough start for the team, which faced problems from the start of proceedings. To try to turn things around, the team made changes to both cars during the parc ferme setting, resulting in penalties for its driving duo.
In the recovery test, the competitors quickly began to gain positions and soon found themselves in the top 10. The Canadian crossed the finish line in ninth place despite the two-time Spanish champion retiring with turf problems, but after the disqualifications of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, he was promoted to seventh.
“Starting from last in the pitlane and finishing ninth is a positive result after a tough few days at COTA. Good to get back to the points after some tough races. The configuration changes we made to improve performance definitely moved us in the right direction and we were more competitive,” Lance said.
“I had good grip in the curves, especially after we put on the medium compound, and I was able to make some good overtakes in Year 12. We will continue to work hard to take this good moment to Mexico,” he concluded.
Alonso regretted not being able to see the checkered flag, but he could still see the positive side of the day. It was a great comeback race for us, with a lot of pace in the AMR23. We wanted to get some points from the pitlane but unfortunately we had to drop out with some damage,” he said.
“It’s a shame because we looked very competitive during today’s race. Today we collected useful data and comparisons between the two cars, which will be important for the rest of the race.
