Volcano eruption puts Italy on high alert
Two volcanic eruptions in Italy have left regions on high alert.
Italy, the country with the only active volcanoes in continental Europe, is impatient. Two of its ten active volcanoes erupted at the same time, panicking the residents of Sicily, in the south of the country.
People living in the shadow of Etna They saw the explosions produce glowing fragments and fountains of lava. Ash covered streets and even the runways at Catania airport, preventing landings and takeoffs. At an altitude of 3,330 metres Etna’s eruptions have been documented since 425 BC.
At the same time, Stromboli It created a thermal cloud up to 2 km high. Civil Protection raised the alert level from orange to red. Authorities are checking evacuation plans.
A video posted by firefighters shows the volcanic material rapidly descending to the coast and extending hundreds of metres into the sea.
Stromboli’s magma is 200 kilometers deep, while Etna’s is only 30 kilometers deep. The simultaneous activity of these two volcanoes, according to scientists, is pure coincidence.
