The ABC metallurgists agreed, in a meeting on Thursday, April 13, 2023, to lay off (temporary suspension of the employment contract) 1,200 workers at the Mercedes-Benz plant in São Bernardo do Campo, which produces buses, trucks and engines.
Mercedes has nearly eight thousand workers in all, of which six thousand are in production.
The measure comes into force in May and will be in effect between two and three months.
According to the entity, during this period, employees will receive 100% of their salaries and a training course.
The decision comes in the face of declining production of buses and trucks.
According to the balance sheet released by Anfavea (National Association of Automobile Manufacturers), on Monday (10), bus production in Brazil recorded a 29.6% decrease in the first quarter of 2023 and truck production decreased by 28.8%.

One of the main factors pointed out by those working in this sector is the entry into force in January of the new technology to limit pollution emissions, which became mandatory and is based on Euro 6 standards. Models using this new technology cost up to 30% more, The bus and truck business decided to anticipate the purchases last year.
Another problem is the shortage of production components, which is still a consequence of the crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition, high interest rates have hindered financing lines for heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks.
Through a note this Thursday (13), the ABC Metallurgists Union once again criticized the interest rate policy by the central bank.
The federation’s executive director, Arualdo Silva, was in a meeting on Thursday afternoon (13), with his two-term colleagues at Mercedes, who showed that they did not agree with the economic policy of the central bank. Due to the decline in production, affected by the rise in interest rates, male and female workers also agreed to negotiated mechanisms to bypass the period, such as approving the layoffs of about 1,200 workers for a period of two to three months with 100% of their salaries and the cycle of their capabilities.
a Transport Diary It also showed that Mercedes-Benz had already announced mass furloughs from April 3, 2023 to May 2, 2023 for 300 workers in a shift.
