Sporotrichosis, a skin disease caused by the fungus Sporothrix sp., is “out of control” in the country, according to infectious disease scientist Flavio Telles, coordinator of the Pathology Committee of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI) and professor at the UFPR (Federal). University of Parana).
Mycosis causes lesions on the skin and is presented in some states in Brazil, in addition to cases recorded in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile.

In May of this year, for example, cases of the disease in Rio de Janeiro state rose by 260% in a decade, according to the Ministry of Health.
There were 579 cases in 2013, compared to 1,518 cases recorded until the end of last year. The most notable occurrence was among children and adolescents – in children under 15 years of age, the number of cases jumped from 26 cases in 2013 to 196 cases in 2022, an increase of 750%.
