The National Technical Committee on Biosafety (CTNBio), a collegiate body associated with MCTI, held its 250th meeting this Wednesday (6) in Brasilia (DF). For 25 years, the agency has been involved in the analysis and approval of products and research with genetically modified organisms (GMOs), found today in most of the corn, soybeans and cotton grown in Brazil, fuels, medicines and vaccines against COVID-19. -19.
The event highlighted the institution’s history since its establishment in 1996 and the approval of Biosafety Law No. 11.105 of March 24, 2005, which established the National Biosafety Policy. The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Paulo Alvim, has highlighted the importance of the institution in recent years.
“Today is the time for celebration, the 250th meeting. This shows the importance, tenacity, tenacity and tenacity of CTNBio for the benefit of the country. I would like to thank the 11 presidents and more than 300 researchers who voluntarily made their contribution to science in Brazil,” he said.

That is why we celebrate the good work done by more than 300 scientists who have already passed through the committee. It has been assessed by CTNBio that it is planted in more than 150 million hectares in the country.”

Historical
On June 19, 1996, the National Biosafety Technical Committee, CTNBio, of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, held its inaugural meeting. At the time, the technology resulting from the development of recombinant DNA technology was showing promise.
Since then, this branch of science has been standardized and today CTNBio/MCTI has already evaluated the biosafety of hundreds of products, which include genetically modified plants, microorganisms for industrial use, animal vaccines, and, most recently, gene therapies for rare diseases, and vaccines for humans, including the Covid vaccines. -19.
