Corinthians are only 29th in the CONMEBOL rankings and will be in Tier 2 of the group stage of the Copa Libertadores de América. The definition came after the authority disclosed the best teams placed in the annual ranking, Friday, through its social networks.
Timon appears only in 29th place with 2526.7 points, most of them won by playing Libertadores. The club is the 10th Brazilian on the list, behind Atletico MG, Cruzeiro, flamingo, Grêmio, Internacional, Palmeiras, Santos, and São Paulo.
In this way, the team confirms the expectations and remains at level 2 of the main South American Championship along with teams such as Atletico, Velez Sarsfield e Colo Colo. In Pot 1 are Palmeiras, Flamengo and Atlético MG, as well as River Plate, Boca Juniors, Nacional, Peñarol and Cerro Porteno. Timon will be in one group of five foreigners – regulations do not allow two teams from the same country in the next drawing of the lottery.
The Libertadores will hold the draw for the knockout stages on Monday, collecting only those who did not get a direct place in the group. In Brazil, the actors are Fluminense In Pot 1, and the America-MG Rookie Championship in Pot 2 – it has nothing to do with the group’s votes.
The next edition of the Cup will begin in the week of February 9 with a preliminary round. In the first stage, six teams from Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela will face each other in home and away matches, which are decided by lottery.
The three seeded teams will join 13 other teams in Stage Two, which will determine Stage 3 knockout duels. The four winners will be in the group stage, while the four eliminated will move to South America 2022.
Only Timão will know his group rivals in March, when the draw for the brackets takes place. The Corinthian participation will begin on April 6, when this stage of the competition begins.
