Fiocruz reports an increase in H1N1 cases among adults across the country
While cases of COVID-19 have decreased since April, Roraima has seen an increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in children. Data from the Infogripe Bulletin was released last Thursday (1) by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (@Fiocruz), referring to the week of May 14-20.
In addition to Roraima, there are signs of RSV growth in children in Acre, Amazonas, Alagoas, Amapa, Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Pará, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rondonia and Sergipe.
In the same period, there has also been an increase in positive tests for influenza A among adults, especially for the H1N1 virus. According to Fiocruz, in May the scenario begun in April was consolidated. Among hospitalizations for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in the population aged 15 years and over, H1N1 cases increased from 9% in March to 31% between the end of April and May. On the other hand, COVID-19 cases decreased from 80% to 53% in the same period.
There was an increase in SARS cases in Acre, Alagoas, Amazonas, Amapa, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Pará, Paraíba, Piauí, Paraná, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondonia and Santa Catarina, Sergipe and Tocantins.
In the long-term trend, the epidemiological scenario indicated by Fiocruz is a moderate growth of SARS, while the trend is stabilization in the short term.
The analysis shows that in the past four pandemic weeks, influenza A accounted for 20.9% of all deaths of hospitalized patients who had a positive lab test, influenza B killed 12.3%, RSV killed 10.4% and Sars-CoV-2/covid-19 killed no. It is still responsible for 51.7% of deaths from respiratory viruses.
