Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is beginning to feel the effects of Hurricane Beryl early Friday, which will batter the Riviera Maya region, which includes Cancun and Playa del Carmen, with storms, heavy rains and damaging winds throughout the day. and Cozumel.

The storm is making landfall as a powerful Category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds estimated at 110 mph (170 km/h), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The storm briefly regained severe hurricane status (Category 3) Thursday evening, before the leading edge of the storm began approaching Mexico on Friday.

However, by early Friday, encountering greater vertical wind shear, the storm had weakened to a Category 2. Meteorologists aboard reconnaissance flights reported that Beryl had fluctuated significantly in intensity due to the greater shear.

The storm has killed at least 11 people in the Caribbean and Venezuela, including a woman in Jamaica, where the storm hit hardest on Wednesday. She died when a tree fell on her home, Reuters reported.

Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean finally weakened to a Category 2 yesterday after reaching Category 5 earlier in the week. As a result, Beryl has been a severe hurricane (Categories 3-5) for 4 days and 8 hours, tying Hurricane Emily (2005) as the storm with the most days as a severe hurricane in Atlantic history prior to August.

Earlier this week, Beryl became the first Category 5 hurricane ever spotted in the Atlantic, two weeks before Hurricane Emily. Late last month, Beryl became the first Category 4 hurricane ever spotted in the Atlantic in June, a record-breaker.
