The agreement covers about 100 ‘stocks’ of fish, defining the total allowable catch (TAC) for each species in 2023.
At the Agriculture and Fisheries Council held between 11 and 12 December, ministers have already reached an agreement on provisional TACs, which will now be updated, reflecting the final agreement.
In line with the scientific advice, it was decided to reduce the general single TACs (-39% in the North Sea, -23% in the Irish Sea, -27% in the West of Ireland and -23% in the Western Channel).
32% in Rockhall, 22% in West of Ireland, Biscay and Portuguese waters (including the Azores) and 14% in the Irish Sea.
Herring stocks declined by 66% in the Faroe Islands and Rockhall, 39% in the Irish Sea and 40% in the Western Channel and Bristol Channel.
In the North Sea, West Scotland, Irish Sea, West Ireland, Porcupine Bank, West English Channel, Bristol Channel, Celtic Sea and South West Orlando, Norwegian Sea, Faroe Islands, Northern Azores and Greenland, horse mackerel has reduced its TAC by 78%. .
For Blaze, 79% is in the Bristol Channel and Celtic Sea, 32% in the East and West English Channel and 26% in the Irish Sea.
In the opposite direction, the EU and the United Kingdom decided to increase the TAC for cod stock in the eastern English Channel to 63%.
The TAC for mackerels increases by 17% in the Irish Sea, Norway lobster increases by 12% in western Scotland and the Faroe Islands and ‘high silver flounder’ increases by 36% in the Barents and Norwegian Seas.
By-catches of plaice increased by 16% in the Celtic Sea and south-west Ireland, while by-catches of hake increased by 43% in western Scotland, the Faroe Islands, the northern Azores and Greenland.
