The anti-immigration protests started after false news about the citizenship of the perpetrator of the attack that killed 3 children.
More than 1,000 people have been arrested following violent protests in England and Northern Ireland against Muslim and immigrant communities, UK authorities announced this Tuesday (13.Aug.2024).
To date, 1,024 people have been arrested and 575 charged across the UK, according to the NPCC (National Police Chiefs’ Council). In Report At X (formerly Twitter), the organization said “Justice is swift and will not tolerate this kind of crime“.
Attorney Thomas Power highlighted the participation of young people in the protests. “This alarming incident must have created real fear among the people targeted by these thugs“, he said.
The episode began on July 29 when a Muslim immigrant was falsely blamed for the killing of 3 girls in Southport, mobilizing right-wing and anti-immigration groups. The perpetrator was actually born in England and was the son of Rwandan parents.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer took a stand against the actions. On August 4, he promised that the protesters would face off.Full force of law”.
