Brazilian and Chinese researchers announce the discovery of species of pterosaurs – GAZ

Scientific journal Scientific reports Last week, he published an article revealing a new species of pterosaur, Meilifeilong youhao, which belongs to the Chaoyangopterity group. He lived in the Cretaceous period in northeastern China. The article was prepared by 14 Chinese and Brazilian researchers, representing nine institutions.

The pterosaur species – like all other members of the group – had no teeth and had a wingspan of more than two metres. This publication marks 20 years of partnership between Chinese and Brazilian researchers in the field of paleontology. “It has been 20 years of a very fruitful and fruitful partnership. We are very pleased with the collaborative work, which has greatly contributed to the advancement of paleontology, especially of pterosaurs, which are vertebrates,” researcher Xiaolin Wang, from the Institute of Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of China, said in a statement. “We express our friendship using the name of this new species: Meilifeilong – which means beautiful flying dragon, and youhao means friendship,” he explained.

It presents a cranial crest above the massive orbitonasal fenestra (opening in The skull includes the two external nostrils) with a smooth extension. Brazilians participate in research.

Scientific cooperation

The new discovery is considered a milestone in 20 years of partnership between Brazilian and Chinese researchers in paleontology. Diogenes de Almeida Campos, who initiated the collaboration with Professor Alexander Kellner, highlighted the importance of the partnership. “Working with colleagues from China has been an important way to promote the internationalization of science,” he analyzed. Over two decades, the Sino-Brazilian collaboration has produced dozens of works, leading to publications in the world's major scientific journals, such as Science and Nature.
