By Gabriel Araujo (Reuters) – Brazil on Friday recorded 1,324 new deaths as a result of Covid-19, bringing the total number of victims of the deadly disease in the country to 548,340, the Ministry of Health reported.
Also, 108,732 new cases of coronavirus were reported, which represents the second highest daily number since the beginning of the epidemic, down only from 115,228 infections on June 23. The total number of cases in the country has risen to 1,632,443.
The cause of Friday’s high number of cases was Rio Grande do Sul, which alone has reported 64,036 infections. According to the Rio Grande do Sul Ministry of Health, this was because the state accounted for about 63,000 blocked cases.
“All of these pending cases – whose dates range from the first half of 2020 to the most recent – are mild influenza syndromes reported in the e-SUS Notifica,” the secretariat said in a note, adding that this was the reason for the lack of a list of cases with data on admissions and deaths.
Brazil is the second country with the highest number of deaths from the disease, after only the United States, and the third in terms of the number of cases, after the United States and India.
However, the country has seen a decline in epidemic numbers in recent weeks as the Covid-19 vaccination campaign has progressed.
