Until September 7, the federal government will not announce any unpopular measures, including the new Level 2 red flag by Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency).

According to writer Lauro Jardim, of the newspaper O Globo, this was the request President Jair Bolsonaro made to his ministers, with the intent that nothing would hinder his pro-demonstrations, scheduled for the Independence holiday.

According to the writer, one of those who received the letter was the Minister of Mines and Energy Bento Albuquerque. Behind the scenes, the new value of the additional tariff, currently R$9.49/100 kWh, was expected to be released by August 31, however, this should not happen.

It should be noted that at a public advisory session held in July, two scenarios were proposed: maintaining the value of R$9.49 or increasing it to R$11.50. However, due to lack of water, the amount is expected to range between BRL 15 and 20 BRL and could be as high as 25 BRL.

A tariff system is an additional fee that is applied to electricity bills when the cost of energy production increases. The additional value reflects the water crisis affecting the reservoirs of hydroelectric power plants. To conserve water, the government has revitalized thermoelectric power plants, which are more expensive and more polluting.

The level 2 red flag value has already been revised up by 52% for July, moving from R$ 6.24 per 100 kWh to the current R$ 9.49.
