Baixada Fluminense won the first public heart hospital

The first general cardiology hospital in Baixada Fluminense, the Hospital do Curaçao São José Municipal, was opened in Duque de Caxias on the 21st of this month. It is located on Nobre de Lacerda Street, Villa Flavia, in the 1st District. HMCOR will provide high-complexity care in Heart diseases, such as myocardial revascularization (bypass) surgery, cardiac catheterization with stent implantation, and pacemaker placement, among other surgeries and heart procedures. The unit should become a reference center for high cardiovascular complications.

With a capacity of 123 beds, including ICU, infirmary and pre- and post-operative rooms, Hospital do Curaçao will offer 24-hour service and target patients will be organized through the State Regulatory System – SER. The goal is to help eliminate the waiting list of chronic patients, serving all municipalities in Baixada Fluminense.

The hospital also has state-of-the-art circulatory, CT and echocardiography equipment. The unit is expected to begin performing other procedures, such as angioplasty and heart surgery. It is expected that 60 catheterization operations will be performed daily, which could reach 22,000 surgical operations annually.

The City of Duque de Caxias took over the former São José Hospital building during the pandemic and began operating as a COVID-19 treatment unit, saving many lives. With support from the state government, the building underwent renovation and adaptation work and another building was built in front of it, connected to the first by a walkway.
