AvonProducts was fined US$46.3 million (about R$239.8) after a former customer claimed powder products sold by the company would have contributed to the development of a cancer called mesothelioma. Its owner, Natura & Co, said it would appeal because it had “compelling reasons” that could overturn the ruling.
Mesothelioma is a type of tumor that affects the mesothelium, which is the layer that lines the chest and abdomen internally.
According to former client Rita-Ann Chapman, the talc in the products had been contaminated with asbestos during the mining process, which would have helped cause the tumor.
In a verdict delivered in the US last week, a jury found the company guilty and decided on fines. Avon is just one of 30 defendants in the lawsuit.
The company claims that it never used asbestos in the composition of its products, and that the court improperly excluded its real-life witnesses.
