A volcano in Iceland has erupted again, for the fifth time since December.
The eruption occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula, which is inhabited by about 30,000 people, south of the capital, Reykjavik.
The event began early Wednesday afternoon after a series of earthquakes north of Grindavik, a fishing town with a population of 3,800, was evacuated.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office said lava was spewed 50 meters into the air from a fissure nearly a kilometer long.
The popular Blue Lagoon resort was evacuated before the volcano erupted, as reported by the Icelandic national broadcaster RUV.
This is the fifth volcanic eruption in the area since December, and only property damage has been reported. The previous eruption began in March and lasted eight weeks.
Iceland is home to 33 active volcanic systems, the highest number in Europe.
The country is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a fault in the ocean floor that separates the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
