The source, who asked not to be named, told AFP that drones of “unknown origin” struck the Al-Sharoba air base, located 150 km southeast of Benghazi (east), where members of the Wagner Group are located. “The attacks did not result in casualties,” he added. Libya is a country mired in a deep political crisis since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, weakened by divisions between east and west and foreign interference. Between 2019 and 2020, Khalifa Haftar, the ‘de facto’ leader of eastern Libya, turned to fighters from other countries and mercenaries from the Wagner Group in his attempt to take control of the capital, Tripoli. After that, hundreds of members of the Russian paramilitary group remained active in eastern and southern Libya.
