The SchipholLast week, the manager of Amsterdam Airport started a pilot project in which passengers are denied entry before 4:00 am before boarding a plane. The purpose of the procedure is to reduce lumps in the check in And security control and speed up the flow of passengers.
Patricia Vitalis, Director of Airport Operations at Royal Schiphol Group, said:During the May holidays, we immediately began developing and implementing procedures to deal with long queues at the airport. These measures are part of the summer business plan presented above and are intended to ensure an enjoyable experience at the airport. Simulations have shown that this is the most effective way to speed up passenger flow through security control. Of course we will monitor the situation“.
Measures
By accepting only passengers with flights within four hours of departure in the lobby, the airport wants to avoid queuing at check-in counters and security controls. Experience over the past few weeks has shown that some travelers arrive more than four hours before their flight, leading to long lines before check-in opens.
The official also requires that passengers travel with as little baggage as possible and that passengers with hand luggage check online, and go directly to security. With this, the airport hopes to reduce the queues it has faced in recent weeks.
Suspension
This is bad news for those who want to arrive early at the airport for duty-free shopping and enjoy VIP lounges – like KLM Giant Hall 6,800 square meters.
The operational challenge for Schiphol arises from the rapid increase in passenger demand and the shortage of personnel at security screening stations. While the issue remains unresolved, KLM offers free flight rebooking. Passengers can request a voucher valid for one year for flights – in addition to KLM itself – from Air France, Delta and Virgin Atlantic.
