Prime Minister of Haiti, Ariel HenryHe resigned from his position on Monday night (11). Henry stated in a statement that he would leave power once a transitional council is formed.

Hours before the speech, Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana and current leader of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), confirmed the Haitian Prime Minister's resignation.

Moreover, US officials stated that the decision on Henry's resignation was made on Friday (8).

He added: “I ask all Haitians to remain calm and do everything in their power so that peace and stability return as soon as possible.”

According to Caricom, the Haitian Transitional Council will consist of two observers and seven voting members, including representatives from the private sector, civil society and the church.

If an interim Prime Minister is appointed, the name chosen by the Council will not be able to participate in the upcoming elections in Haiti.

The President of Guyana stated that the Caribbean Community and other international entities are committed to cooperating for the peaceful transition of power in Haiti and the holding of free elections.

The gang leaders and part of the population wanted Henry gone and a general election held, which had not been held for nearly a decade. On the other hand, the Prime Minister stated that it is not safe to hold elections yet.

US officials stated that Henry would be able to remain in the territory as long as necessary and that his return to Haiti depended on the security situation in the country improving.

The deteriorating situation in Haiti has prompted Brazil to urgently demand the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution establishing the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.
