The United States congratulated ultra-liberal Javier Millay, who won the second round of Argentina’s presidential election this Sunday, and called on him to fight the economy, human rights, democracy and the climate crisis.
“Congratulations to Javier Mili and the people of Argentina! We look forward to working together on shared priorities that benefit both our peoples,” US Ambassador to Argentina Mark Stanley said on social media.
The ambassador cited “the protection of human rights and democracy, the fight against climate change, improving the investment climate and investing in the middle class” as potential areas of cooperation.
It was the first reaction from the US government after Peronist candidate Sergio Massa publicly acknowledged his defeat in Argentina’s election before the official results were known.

The provocative style has marked Miley’s campaign in recent months and has attracted a section of Argentines critical of traditional politics and radical proposals in the face of Argentina’s severe economic crisis.

The country recorded an inflation rate of 142.7% in 12 months, the highest since 1991. In this scenario there is an increase in the poverty rate, which affects more than 40% of the population.

The candidate has unconventional proposals in his government plan, such as abolishing Argentina’s central bank and dollarizing the economy, as well as adopting gold and cryptocurrencies as monetary standards.
