(Reuters) – Nearly 1.1 million people watched “Spider-Man: No Return Home” in theaters across the United States, AMC Entertainment Holdings reported on Friday, a record showing for a movie the company released in December.
In Spider-Man: No Return Home, Tom Holland stars as Marvel’s close web hero and Zendaya as his girlfriend MJ.
The film has already received rave reviews from film critics, with which box office analysts have predicted that the superhero adventure will set record sales for ticket sales in the pandemic next weekend.
As of Friday afternoon, “No Return Home” has 95% positive reviews out of 207 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes’ website.
“This was the largest number of people seeing a movie in a single day at AMC theaters in the United States during 2020 and 2021,” said the world’s largest movie theater chain.
Similarly, Cinemark Holdings said the new “Spider-Man” movie had the biggest nightly box office opening of all time in the United States.
After a year of lockdowns and restrictions due to the global health crisis, the growing momentum of the Ômicron variant of Covid-19 in the country appears to have little effect on Marvel’s latest launch.
Earlier this month, Odeon Cinemas, which is owned by London-based AMC, said ticket sales for the film were three times that of the recently released “007 – No Time to Die.”
