Putin has visited North Korea for the first time in 24 years. Before his meeting with Kim Jong-un, the Russian president attended a reception attended by soldiers and civilians.

After the ceremony, Kim and Putin spoke. The Russian president thanked North Korea for its “unwavering” support for Russian policy, including in Ukraine.

Putin said the United States and its allies have a hegemonic and imperialist policy, which he will fight against.

Kim Jong-un said that relations between Russia and South Korea are entering a new period of prosperity. He also expressed his intention to expand strategic cooperation with the country.

Kim said he fully supported “military action” in Ukraine and reinforced his “unconditional” support for Russia.

The United States fears that Russia will contribute to North Korea’s nuclear and weapons programs.

Also, the US government has accused Russia of using North Korean weapons in Ukraine. Both Moscow and Pyongyang deny the arms transfer.

Yet during the meeting, Putin invited Kim Jong-un to a new meeting in Moscow. The North Korean leader was in Russia in September 2023. However, at that time, the meeting with Putin took place in a city near the border with North Korea.

Kim and Putin also held a closed-door meeting to discuss “very important and sensitive” issues.
