After Macron, British PM asks Brazil to Security Council

Keir Starmer called for the inclusion of other G4 countries and highlighted the need to reform the body to make it more representative.

Keir Starmer (Labour Party, centre-left), Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, this Thursday (September 26, 2024) supported the admission of Brazil as a permanent member of the UN Security Council (United Nations). G4 countries (India, Japan and Germany).

The Security Council must change and transform itself into a representative body that is ready to act and not paralyzed by politics. We want permanent African representation in the Council along with Brazil, India, Japan and Germany“, Starmer declared during his speech at the 79th General Assembly in New York (USA).

The United Kingdom’s statement echoes France’s position. On Wednesday (September 25), President Emmanuel Macron told the international body’s plenary session that he would defend the group’s inclusion in the UN system.

Countries’ support for the G4 is not unprecedented. Permanent members of the Security Council, the United Kingdom and France, are historic supporters of the group – created in 2004 with the aim of mutually protecting the candidacy of its members to the Security Council.

However, the bloc has historical opposition from the US and China. Neighbors Germany, Brazil, India and Japan are also pushing against entry. An example is the so-called coffee club created by countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Italy, Pakistan and South Korea.
