Activists say an Iranian woman falls into a coma after being beaten by morality police
Activists told Reuters on Wednesday (4) that Iranian teenager Armita Giravand fell into a coma and is in critical condition after being beaten by morality police in the Tehran subway on Sunday (1).
In a video shared by the authorities, it is possible to see the moment when a person is taken off the train and left on the platform.
According to the Iranian-Kurdish human rights group Hengaw, Giravand clashed with officials responsible for enforcing a dress code based on the country’s government’s interpretation of Islam. In Iran, women are forced to wear the hijab to cover their hair and neck.
One activist, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: “We are following her case closely.” His relatives said that there was a heavy presence of plainclothes policemen at the hospital.
The Iranian authorities denied these accusations.
“According to the videos analyzed, [a jovem] Masoud Dorosti, CEO of the company responsible for the Tehran Metro, said: “She lost her balance, perhaps due to low pressure, and fell at the entrance of the train, half of her body inside the train and the other half outside it.”
The low quality of footage provided by the government makes it difficult to identify people in the photos. The recording also does not include an angle from inside the train, and there are editing points in the video.
Therefore, activists on social media are now demanding that the authorities publish photos of the interior of the vehicle.
