A volcano erupted in Iceland for the second time in a month
A volcano erupted in Iceland for the second time in a month, Thursday (8). This phenomenon was recorded on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Pictures published by RÚV public television show lava emerging from cracks in the ground.
The last time the volcano erupted was on January 14, and it continued for two days. At that time, the lava reached the outskirts of the city of Grindavik, causing some houses to catch fire. About 4 thousand people were forced to leave the area.
There is still no information about whether the residents of Grindavik will be affected by the eruption again.
Iceland has more than 30 active volcanoes. In November 2023, the country began building dams to help divert lava flows away from residential areas and infrastructure.
Earthquakes in recent months
At the end of 2023, earthquakes struck the Reykjanes Peninsula area. The tremors intensified as the days passed. Between November 8 and 9, for example, 1,400 earthquakes were recorded.
The earthquakes left Grindavik full of cracks. Property and city streets were damaged. The city is located only 54 km from the capital, Reykjavik.
At the end of November, as the earthquakes subsided, the authorities reduced the level of danger posed by the volcano to the city. Residents were also allowed to return to collect their belongings.
In previous years, other eruptions were recorded in the area as well. However, the phenomena occurred in a controlled manner, in areas devoid of population, and without causing any damage.
