A US court will hear the TikTok ban in September

The law, approved by President Joe Biden, forces Byte Dance, the app’s owner, to sell the app’s operations in the country

An appeals court in Washington DC (US) announced on Tuesday (May 28, 2024) that it will hear TikTok’s argument in September. Due to legislation approved by President Joe Biden, Byte Dance, the owner of the application, will be forced to sell. Processor The country has until January 19 to avoid the ban on TikTok in the North American territory. The company is contesting the law. Information from Reuters.

The court’s decision comes in response to a joint request by TikTok content creator group Byte Dance and the US Department of Justice for an expedited hearing.

According to the appellate court’s schedule, the parties concerned have until June 20 to submit their legal briefs. While the reply petitions are scheduled for August 15, the judiciary has given them till July 26 to respond.

Both TikTok and the Justice Department are hoping for a decision by Dec. 6, which would allow enough time for a possible review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

On May 14, content creators on the Chinese app took legal action to block the implementation of a law that threatens to ban TikTok, which is used by 170 million Americans. They argue that the app has had a significant impact on American life, a position shared by TikTok and ByteDance in similar legal action.
