A two-month-old baby was found dead in the early hours of Friday morning after a migrant boat capsized off the Greek coast of Lesbos, a forensic doctor told AFP on Saturday.
Coroner Theodoros Nosias said the minor was taken to hospital, where he was certified dead.
Sources at the immigrant reception center told AFP that the sinking occurred when the rubber boat – which was carrying mainly African migrants – hit rocks off the coast in the Fara region. In the rescue operation, 34 people were saved alive. Two of them sustained minor injuries.
The Greek Coast Guard recorded 1,500 rescues in the first eight months of this year, compared to less than 600 last year.
