Residents felt a strong earthquake in Taiwan, Tuesday night (2) – Wednesday (3) morning, local time. The authorities issued a tsunami warning in Japan.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the magnitude of the earthquake reached 7.5, and its epicenter was near the eastern coast of Taiwan. According to authorities, residents felt the quake near the surface.

A second tremor with a magnitude of 6.6 was recorded 13 minutes after the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.5, according to Japanese authorities.

Waves up to three meters high could hit the Japanese island of Okinawa at around 10pm Brasilia time, according to NHK. Residents living in the area were ordered to evacuate.

NHK also said waves as high as 30 cm were recorded on the Japanese island of Yonaguni, which is about 100 kilometers off the east coast of Taiwan.

The earthquake was also felt by residents of Chinese coastal cities, including Shanghai.

In Taiwan, witnesses interviewed by Reuters reported that part of Taipei was without electricity.
