A Champions League final in the US is a ‘possibility’ in the future, says UEFA president

The Champions League final could be held in the United States in the future as Europe’s governing body seeks to capitalize on the sport’s growing popularity in the country, UEFA president Aleksandar Ceferin has said.

European club football’s most important event has never been held outside the continent since the competition began in 1955, but Ceferin said they could be breaking with tradition as they play with the idea.

“It’s possible. We’ve started arguing about it, but one year it’s the World Cup, (20)24 Euros, this year (the final) is in Istanbul, ’24 in London and ’25 in Munich. It’s , let’s see,” Ceferin told the Men in Blazers podcast. .

“Football is so popular in America these days…Americans are willing to pay for the best, nothing less. So they will follow European soccer like basketball fans follow the NBA in Europe.

“What shocked me (about the North American audience) was that more people watched the European Championship finals in America than the NBA Finals…the Bowl.

This year’s Super Bowl drew an average of 113 million viewers across US television and digital platforms.

However, Ceferin said the time difference is a problem, especially if they play in the afternoon on the Pacific Coast, where matches start at midnight in Europe.

The United States will co-host the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada.
