Camila Cabello Participate in “The Tonight Show with Jimmy FallonLast Friday, July 23, to promote the song “Don’t Go yet”, shortly after audio was made available on digital platforms.
It was the first time the song was performed on television, with Latin inspiration and a lot of excitement. But one detail resonated more than the singer’s voice. The “black face” – that practice of darkening the skin with colour, which is considered racist – was done by one of the singer’s dancers.
Fans used social media to criticize the situation, then Camila took to her Instagram post:
“This guy was trying to look like a white guy with a terrible spray of tan. We deliberately tried to get a multicultural group together on stage, and it wasn’t expecting to look like a Latino person. There are white people, African Americans, Latinos, etc. So the point wasn’t Don’t try to make Latin anyway.
Cabello explained that the idea was to “bring a character from the ’80s” into the presentation.
“There are a lot of people in the performance who are not. The point was to try to make everyone look like a character from the over 80s as in the video, including a white guy with a terrible orange spray.”
What is a black face?
Blackface is a practice that is at least 200 years old. It is believed to have started around 1830 in New York. But it’s not just about painting your skin a different color. It was a way blacks were mocked for white entertainment. Negative stereotypes have been associated with jokes, especially in the United States and Europe.
In the 19th century, white actors used paint to paint their faces black in comedy performances, and acted exaggeratedly to illustrate the behavior that whites associate with blacks. They also mocked the accents of the characters they included in the plays. This came at a time when not even blacks were allowed to stand on stage and act, due to the color of their skin.

This practice continued in television and theater programs for most of the 20th century. For example, the BBC had a program that used the black face for 20 years: The Black and White Minstrel Show. The audience for this hugely popular event reached 16 million people, the program even won the prestigious Golden Rose of Montreux in 1961.
Why is a black face considered offensive?
Blackface is offensive because it advocates negative stereotypes about black people. It appeared in the United States to entertain white masses at the expense of a minority group fighting for their civil rights after centuries of slavery.
Kenji Andrews of Birmingham City University in the UK said: “The black face is rooted in racism, which is associated with fear and ridicule of black people. It is a long-standing racial problem in Europe. I’ve noticed since the time of Shakespeare that the look of whites makes the skin dark.”
