The United States is assessing the “tragic attack” that killed the president of Haiti overnight, and the White House said Wednesday (7) that President Joe Biden will be notified of the assassination.

Haitian President Jovnell Moyes was shot dead overnight at his private home by unidentified assailants.

“We are still gathering information,” said White House Press Secretary Jen Zaki. “It’s a tragedy (sic). It’s a terrible crime,” Zaki said in an interview CNN.

The U.S. government received more details about the attack, and Zaki expressed solidarity with the Haitian people.

“We are ready to provide any assistance and we are with them,” he said. “Of course our embassy and foreign ministry will be in close contact, but it is a tragedy. We support them. It is important that the people of Haiti know that.”

The Haitian opposition has accused the United States – Haiti’s main foreign donor – of tolerating Moyza and giving its support to US foreign policy. His government broke with the Caribbean community (Carigam) to oppose Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
