Sao Carlos City Hall celebrates Science and Music Day

The City of São Carlos, through the Municipal Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation, in partnership with the São Carlos City Council and the Commission for Culture, Science, Technology and Tourism (CCCTT), held on Wednesday morning (10/16) a special event in honor of Science and Technology Day and Music Day. The meeting took place in the municipal palace hall.

The initiative aims to recognize art and culture and its value and combine it with scientific discoveries, in addition to encouraging the development of new research. The event also aims to enhance awareness of the importance of science, technology and innovation for the progress of humanity and improving the quality of life, and to highlight the benefits resulting from progress in the fields of health, food, energy, environment, security and communications. .

The event included a performance of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) performed by musicians and teachers from the Maestro João Sepe Music School: Daniel Antonio (percussion), Claudio Junior (accordion), and Carlos Eduardo (saxophone and flute). In addition, lectures were held with the Secretary of the Municipality of Science and Technology, José Galizia Tondisi, who addressed the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and a lecture on the “Commission on Science and Technology” given by Prof. Dr. Marcelo Ferreira Lourenço, President of the Municipal Science and Technology Council.

Secretary José Galizia Tondisi stressed the historical relationship between science, technology, innovation and culture since the time of ancient Greece. “It is essential that a city like São Carlos, recognized as a national capital of technology, supports cultural development related to science. Many scientists from São Carlos are also talented musicians. This concert is therefore an initiative to integrate science and culture into one project.”

Merlin Simoes, Regional Secretary of the Brazilian Association for the Advancement of Science, highlighted the importance of joint celebration of music and science. “Promoting discussion around the UN Sustainable Development Goals – one of the pillars of National Technology Week – alongside the celebration of Musician’s Day and MPB demonstrates that science, art and culture go hand in hand. They are essential for educating people and invite us to reflect at a time of major climate and social transformations,” he stressed. That we need to build a more just and equitable society for everyone.

Representing the Presidency of the City Council, Councilor Robertino Mori, Chairman of the Committee on Culture, Science, Technology and Tourism, stressed the importance of this integration between music and science. “It is necessary to unite our academic centers with public authorities; this is what São Carlos has always dreamed of. We are committed to holding a new event on November 22, the Day of the Musician, with Professor Dr. Paulo Estévão Cruvenil, scientist and musician (guitar and seven-string), announced that it unites science And music again.”

Professor Dr. Marcelo Ferreira Lourenço also championed the creation of a new medical course in the city in partnership with Santa Casa. “This new course will not only meet the needs of the unified system in São Carlos, but also throughout the region,” he stressed.

The event was also attended by Councilor Andre Rebelo and Municipal Secretary of the Regional Administration, Valciner Bragato.
