Italo Ferreira, gold medalist and world champion surfer, has found another purpose outside the water: appearing in iconic photos that highlight natural phenomena. A year after appearing in front of a solar eclipse, the athlete was recorded in front of the “Comet of the Century.”
The records, taken by Red Bull photographer Marcello Maragni, show Italo observing comet 2023 A3 Tuchinshan-Atlas, which last passed Earth 80,000 years ago. The images were taken in Baia Formosa, in Italo’s home country of Rio Grande do Norte, last Monday, October 14, exactly one year after the eclipse photo.
-I am passionate about photography. I have a lot of ideas in my head, and whenever Maragni comes up with something better, I want to do it, because it conveys the spirit of moving forward. I’m like this in sports, with my surfing style, and in life as well. It’s a way to show that sport is connected to everything in the universe – Italo comments.
The process took two days and presented Maragni with challenges with light and clouds on the horizon, using different lenses and techniques until the perfect image was obtained.
“When I realized that this comet would pass very close to Earth and I remembered the eclipse we had captured last year, I imagined that we could repeat this feat and record another historic moment,” Maragni comments. “Taking these special photos with Italo has become a tradition, and it is very cool.” He is an athlete who loves creating amazing images and is always open to ideas, wanting to be involved in the whole process.
