RTX 5090 could have 24GB of VRAM and will launch in 2025

After the technical specifications of the upcoming GeForce RTX 5090 were leaked in recent days, YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead has leaked parts of the technical specifications of the RTX 5090 notebook. The chip should only have 24GB of VRAM with GDDR7 technology, but it should be launched after A few months from the desktop version.

According to the informant, the graphics processing unit uses a GB203 chip, which is different from the GB202 chip used in the desktop version. The die size is 377 mm, while the rest of the PCB will contain 24 GB of VRAM in the GDDR7 protocol with a 256-bit interface, different from the 32 GB of the standard board.

The rest of the specifications are still a mystery, but it is very likely that the chip will have significantly lower specifications compared to the regular model. A standard RTX 5090 should have around 21,000 CUDA cores, so it’s not hard to imagine that the mobile version will have 40-60% fewer cores, depending on the trends of recent years.

Even with the differences, mobile GPUs are becoming increasingly closer to desktop models. (Image: Nvidia/Disclosure)source: Nvidia

Energy expenditure can be high

What’s not entirely clear is the RTX 5090’s consumption levels for laptops. With the desktop model expected to consume up to 600 watts and use two 12VHPWR connectors, it is expected that even the portable version will consume a lot of power, requiring laptops with powerful cooling systems.

Additionally, the RTX 5080 will also supposedly have a laptop version with 16GB of VRAM, but there are no details on that launch. The same applies to the RTX 5070 card, which is supposed to arrive with a capacity of 12 GB, but the big question is whether the manufacturer will use GDDR7 or GDDR6 memory.

As for the release date, the RTX 5090 mobile device should only be launched between the end of the first quarter of 2025 and the beginning of the second quarter. This period corresponds to GTC, an annual event held by Nvidia to announce and demonstrate certain technologies, although it is not a conference focused on household products.
