US attorneys say Trump “resorted to crimes” after losing the 2020 election

Donald Trump “resorted to felonies” in an attempt to stay in power after losing the 2020 election, federal prosecutors argue in a newly released court document that the former US president is not entitled to immunity from prosecution.

The document was released today, Wednesday (2). It was drafted by special counsel Jack Smith’s committee following a Supreme Court ruling that narrowed the scope of prosecution and gave broad immunity to former presidents.

Trump’s legal team has used a delay strategy in every case he faces.

The 165-page document may be the last chance for attorneys to outline their case against Trump before the Nov. 5 election.

Prosecutors presented new details, including an allegation that a White House official overheard Trump telling family members that it didn’t matter if he won or lost the election.

Trump pleaded guilty to four criminal charges of conspiring to block congressional certification of the election, deceiving the United States of accurate results and interfering with Americans’ right to vote.

Attorneys working with Smith released new evidence that the charges against Trump have survived a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that former presidents enjoy broad immunity from criminal prosecution for official actions taken while president.

Prosecutors said the document would present new evidence, including witness interviews and depositions. Most of these matters are not made public until trial.

Prosecutors filed the court document on Thursday (26), but a judge had to approve the proposed amendments before it could be made public.
