Electronic Travel Authorization will come into force in 2025
The United Kingdom has announced that from January 8, 2025, ETA will be required for arrivals from several countries, including Brazil. The purpose of this authorization is to increase border control and ensure greater security for those entering the region.
Initially, citizens of all countries except the European Union will have to comply with this new rule. For Europeans, the requirement will come into force in April 2025.
Application Process ETA Done entirely online, it is recommended that requests be made up to three working days before travel, according to the British government. The authorization costs 10 pounds, approximately R$73, and orders can be placed through the official UK website.
The ETA, if approved, is valid for two years, allowing multiple entries for stays of up to six months. However, even with authorization, entry into the United Kingdom is not guaranteed, as the traveler must go through immigration control upon arrival in the country.
Why does the UK implement ETA?
The main reason ETA was introduced was to increase security at UK borders. Through this system, the British government can identify potential security risks, such as criminal activity or illegal immigration, before travelers even arrive. Also, this authorization helps in tracking tourists and temporary workers.
According to British officials, ETA also benefits travelers who qualify as “low risk,” allowing for a more streamlined immigration process. An estimated 267,000 Brazilians visit the United Kingdom annually for tourism, business or study, and the new electronic authentication promises to facilitate entry for this public.
How Brazilians can request an ETA to the United Kingdom
The ETA application process is simple and quick, and can be done entirely digitally without the need to visit embassies or physically obtain a visa. See step-by-step how to request authorization:
- Access the official British Government website or download the official app.
- Upload or take a photo of your passport used for travel.
- Complete the required standards and send a recent photograph.
- Fill in the requested data including personal and passport information.
- Answer questions about travel safety and eligibility.
- Pay a fee of 10 pounds (about R$73).
After completing the process, request analysis time takes up to three business days. It is worth remembering that the ETA is sent electronically, and the passenger does not need to carry a copy of the document.
What happens when I get to the UK?
Even with an ETA permit, Brazilians must go through immigration control upon landing.
UK Border Force, the border control service, may check documents and require additional information such as proof of sufficient funds for stay and return. At some airports, electronic passport gates (eGate) are available for ETA holders.
If all requirements are met, tourists will be able to travel freely across the four countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, it is important to remember that the permit does not allow entry into the Republic of Ireland or other European countries.
ETA validity and renewal
Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years or until the expiry date of the passport used in the application, whichever comes first. During the period of validity, the traveler may make multiple visits to the United Kingdom, each lasting up to six months. After this period, a new authorization must be requested to continue the journey.
