Why does Joe Biden want to ban Chinese connected cars from the US?

However, China remains a major concern, with fears that connected vehicles are collecting sensitive data from drivers and passengers and recording detailed information about US infrastructure through their cameras and sensors.

According to the White House, the information could be used by malicious agents to disrupt infrastructure or the vehicles themselves. The proposed legislation targets connected vehicles that are designed, developed, manufactured or supplied by companies with “sufficient ties” to China or Russia.

Therefore, “imports of connected vehicles and VCS hardware devices that use VCS (Vehicle Connected Systems) and ATS (Automated Driving Systems) software will no longer be imported into the United States.”

If it is approved, the software bans will take effect from model year 2027, while the hardware bans will last until 2030. Details are yet to be finalised.
