Robert F. The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday rejected Kennedy Jr.’s attempt to put his name back on the ballot in New York state, even though he suspended his campaign in August as an independent candidate. The US president later announced his support for Republican Donald Trump.
The justices rejected a request by the Kennedy Jr. campaign and other allies that New York election officials put his name back on the ballot after state courts disqualified him for having an ineligible home address.
When the politician suspended his campaign, he promised to withdraw his name from the most contested states, particularly those with a Republican leaning, but said he would remain in the race in other states. Since then, Kennedy Jr. has been urging his supporters to vote for Trump.
His fight to stay on the ballot in politically heavily Democratic New York began when a state judge upheld cases that Kennedy had given false residency there when he actually lived in California, a violation of the law.
The judge agreed that the address was “false” and that it was “used to maintain his voter registration and further his own political ambitions in this state”.
Kennedy Jr.’s campaign appealed, but both a federal judge and the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected his request this month.
