Nike out of Brazil? Adidas could be new distributor

The Brazilian national team could be about to undergo a major change in its official kit. From 2027, Adidas could replace Nike as the national team’s sporting goods supplier. This information was published by Flashscore, which highlighted that the German company has offered a large sum to the Brazilian Federation to print its brand on the Selecao’s shirt.

According to the sources, Adidas is willing to pay $100 million annually, which is more than 540 million riyals at the current exchange rate. This is the same amount that Nike pays to the German and French federations in their recent agreements. Adidas’ proposal meets the expectations of the Brazilian federation, which wants to maintain the level of investment that Nike has made in recent years.

Brazilian Federation puts pressure on Nike in negotiations

The current scenario of the negotiations between Nike and the Brazilian Football Confederation is complicated. The two parties are still discussing the terms of the new agreement, but Nike’s first proposal was deemed insufficient and rejected by the Brazilian entity.

Nike currently has priority in negotiations until the end of 2024, during which time the CBF can hear offers from other competing companies. The brand has been the official sponsor of the Brazilian team since 1996, and the current contract signed in 2007 remains in effect until the end of 2026. This long-standing relationship has made the brand very familiar to Brazilians. Nike currently pays the CBF $35 million per season, an amount that the entity’s board of directors considers outdated.

What are Nike’s agreements with Germany and France?

The German Football Association (DFB) ended its more than 70-year partnership with Adidas in March 2024. The decision was made after the DFB deemed Adidas’ proposal uncompetitive compared to Nike’s offer.

Nike will start sponsoring the German national team from 2027, with a contract valid until 2034. The agreement is also worth $100 million annually. The American company recently renewed its contract with the French national team, which moved from 2026/27 to 2033/34, paying the same amounts to Germany.
