US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke on the phone with Venezuelan opposition figures María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia this Tuesday (17), assuring them that “Washington will continue to defend the return to democratic freedoms” in the South American country. .
“Blinken praised his courage and commitment to democratic principles in the face of brutal repression and suffering,” the State Department said, not clarifying whether they were talking about recognizing González Urrutia as president-elect.
The Secretary of State pledged that the United States “will continue to defend the return of democratic freedoms in Venezuela and fight to ensure that the will of the Venezuelan electorate is respected and that President Nicolás Maduro and his representatives are held accountable for their actions.”
González Urrutia claims to have won the July 28 presidential election. The conversation with Blinken came days after Washington imposed sanctions against 16 Venezuelan officials for “election fraud.”
