A fall in consumption
A study concluded that the introduction of a tax on sugary drinks significantly reduced children’s sugar consumption. According to estimates, sugar consumption was reduced by about 4.8 grams per day. In the case of adults, the difference in daily consumption is greater: 11 grams less sugar.
If we take into account the sugar in sugary drinks, the reduction in consumption is 3 grams in the case of minors (representing a 23.5% reduction in consumption) and about 5 grams in the case of adults (40.5% less).
Far from recommendations
However, the group responsible for the study warns that consumption levels of “free sugars” exceed the levels recommended by the World Health Organization for 10-year-olds, and 19 grams for children aged 4 to 6 years.
