Artificial intelligence (AI) analysis suggests the image of Jesus Christ’s face on the Shroud of Turin, known as the Holy Shroud, is authentic. Researchers from Institute of CrystallographyIn Italy, a new X-ray analysis suggests the shroud may in fact date back to the time of Christ. The study, published in the journal Heritage, suggests the shroud is about 2,000 years old.

For centuries, many believers have considered the Shroud of Turin to be a relic showing the face of Jesus. An analysis in the 1980s suggested that the cloth may be a 14th-century forgery. However, a recent publication has debunked this hypothesis.
New AI analysis points to historical authenticity
The research was conducted on a small sample of the shroud currently kept in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin, Italy. But the researchers say their conclusions are based on the shroud being preserved in specific conditions for 13 centuries, before it appeared in historical records in 1354.

The study was led by Italian professor Liberato De Caro, who identified similarities between the Shroud of Turin and a textile found in Masada, Israel, between 55 and 74 AD. De Caro also noted the presence of pollen particles from the East in the Shroud’s fibres.
AI technology generates new images
From this new information, advanced AI techniques, such as those used by the Midjourney platform, produced vivid images of the face imprinted on the shroud. One of these images displays features strongly suggestive of traditional representations of Jesus in art, such as long hair and a beard.

Although the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin has been debated for centuries, the Catholic Church has not officially ruled on its authenticity. However, several popes, including Pope Francis, have already treated the Shroud as a holy relic. An Argentine even made a pilgrimage to Turin in 2015 to pray before the cloth.
