OpenAI Detects Iranian Attempt to Influence US Elections

According to the company, the group produced content about US politics, the Gaza conflict and Israeli participation in the Olympics.

Artificial intelligence firm OpenAI said this Friday (Aug. 16, 2024) that an Iranian group tried to influence the US presidential election by using the chatbot chatbot.

The Iranian operation, called Storm-2035, produced content about American politics, including comments on candidates, the conflict in Gaza, and Israeli participation in the Olympic Games. Information from Guardian.

However, according to OpenAI, the move failed to significantly engage the public. Most of the posts had little or no interaction, and there was no evidence that the articles had been shared on the Internet.

Content is disseminated on social media and websites. OpenAI’s investigation showed that Microsoft had help and that ChatGPT created articles and comments for social networks.

To contain the attack, OpenAI banned the accounts involved and began monitoring new attempts to violate its policies.

The case demonstrates companies’ concerns about using artificial intelligence in disinformation and political influence.

Earlier, Microsoft’s report had already identified the Storm-2035 network, which used websites posing as news stations to engage North American voters with polarizing messages.
