Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ campaign team said on Tuesday (13) that it had been the target of foreign hackers, days after officials in charge of her rival Donald Trump’s electoral activity hinted that the former Republican president’s campaign had been subjected to a cyberattack by Iran.
“In July, the FBI notified the campaign’s legal and security team that we were the target of a foreign interference operation,” a member of Harris’ team told AFP.
“We have robust cybersecurity measures in place and are not aware of any security breaches in our systems as a result of these efforts,” he added.
Harris campaign officials have not provided information about the source of the unsuccessful cyberattack.
The US State Department warned Iran on Monday of consequences if it interferes in the election, after the Trump campaign said it was the victim of a cyberattack.
Trump’s team suggested on Saturday that Iran was behind the attack, sending documents including research they used to assess his colleague J.D. Vance to reporters.
The media also warned against publishing the documents, saying such action would be “an act of America’s enemies.”
The tone was different from 2016, when Trump said at a news conference that he hoped Russia would “find” Hillary Clinton’s emails, remarks widely seen as encouraging more cyberattacks against his White House rival.
US intelligence concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to support Trump, who rejected the results.
